Mental health in transgender and gender diverse youth

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals have a gender identity that differs from their gender assigned at birth. The Archivist realises that the whole area of TGD can be complicated and it is important for clinicians to understand some of the key medical and mental health issues as the associated social, political and legal arenas evolve. TGD adolescents (aged 13 to 17 years) are estimated to make up approximately 0.7% of the US population. There is evidence that TGD individuals are at increased risk of mental health problems relative to cisgender (the gender you identify with is the same as the gender you were assigned at birth) peers.
