Keeping young people connected during COVID-19: the role of online groups

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on young people, disrupting education, routines, hobbies and peer interactions and there is concern for longer term effects on physical and mental health outcomes. Young people living with chronic health conditions face additional challenges including reduced or no face-to-face contact with medical teams, shielding and the increased stressors of being in ‘at-risk’ groups and social isolation. In a climate of social isolation and disconnectedness, online groups could provide a method of delivering healthcare and support that strengthens social connectedness and reduces isolation. Plant based diets

It used to be hard to find a vegan restaurant; now there are many and various expert committees around the world are recommending plant-based diets (PBDs) for both human and planetary health. More people are adopting meat-free diets in industrialised countries. What are the health effects on children eating plant based diets? Desmond MA et al . Mental health in transgender and gender diverse youth

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals have a gender identity that differs from their gender assigned at birth. The Archivist realises that the whole area of TGD can be complicated and it is important for clinicians to understand some of the key medical and mental health issues as the associated social, political and legal arenas evolve. TGD adolescents (aged 13 to 17 years) are estimated to make up approximately 0.7% of the US population. There is evidence that TGD individuals are at increased risk of mental health problems relative to cisgender (the gender you identify with is the same as the gender you were assigned at birth) peers. Silveri MM et al [ JAMA Network Open 2021;4:e2113637. doi: 10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2021.13637 ] have examined mental health outcomes among TGD versus cisgender adolescents in a residential mental health treatment programme.
