Leading change by loosening up

Changing practice, reducing variation in healthcare, introducing new ideas, and embedding, normalising and sustaining change in complex healthcare systems while remaining efficient and cost effective, is a huge challenge for healthcare all over the world. Compton-Phillip A (NEJM Catalyst 2020;1(1): DOI: https://ift.tt/2GSIEkH) describes a simple change model, reliably implemented, and claims that this has led to substantive change in the management of complex, intractable healthcare problems at one of the largest US health systems. The Archivist has seen much change and different leadership models and management changes within the NHS. Although this paper describes a model in the US healthcare system it is a great read with some lovely worked examples with evidence of successful leadership, change in practice and improvement in healthcare delivery. It also introduces us to a new medical journal; the NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Care Delivery.
