Archivist: Benzodiazepine-refractory status epilepticus

A third major, emergency medicine, network study examining the management of acute refractory status epilepticus has been published this year. The ESSET study from the American PECARN emergency medicine network, compliments ConSEPT (from the PREDICT network; Australia [Dalziel SR et al. Lancet 2019;393:2135–2145]) and ECLIPSE (from the PERUKI network; UK and Ireland [Lyttle MD et al. Lancet 2019;393:2125–34]). Kapur J et al. [N Engl J Med 2019;381:2103–13. They compared the efficacy and safety of three intravenous anticonvulsive agents in both children and adults who had presented with convulsive status epilepticus that was unresponsive to treatment with benzodiazepines. The primary outcome was absence of clinically evident seizures and improvement in the level of consciousness by 60 min after the start of drug infusion, without additional anticonvulsant medication.
