Should we trust clinical guidelines?

We are all living in a clinical world drowning in clinical guidelines, the pressure to practice evidence based medicine and the battle of staying up to date with that evidence plus run our clinical service, care for families and live our lives. The Archivist has often heard the phrases; ‘Well, those are just guidelines’, ‘They have not included this study’,I am using current evidence’ and ‘ They are not that good quality’. It is true that guidelines can get out of date quite quickly and some people strongly question the evidence used in some guidelines. So can we trust those guidelines that are out there?
